Azure UAE North vs AWS Middle East (UAE): a practical choice for SME workloads

Microsoft Azure cloud platform used for regional landing zones and infrastructure

Azure UAE North opened in Dubai and UAE Central in Abu Dhabi. AWS launched the Middle East (UAE) region, me-central-1, in 2022. For an SME that already lives in Microsoft 365, "we should be on AWS because it is the market leader" is usually the wrong starting point. For a team whose developers already run on AWS, forcing everything into Azure to satisfy a single vendor slide is equally unhelpful.

Start from identity and the apps you already pay for

If Entra ID is your directory and staff already use Teams, Intune, and Azure Virtual Desktop, an Azure landing zone is less operational work. If the estate is Linux, Kubernetes, and vendor appliances that ship AWS CloudFormation first, me-central-1 will move faster. Hybrid is normal: Microsoft 365 for productivity, AWS or Azure for the line-of-business app, as long as networking, logging, and backup are designed on purpose.

  • Put production data and backups in the UAE region you named in the contract. Do not leave snapshots in a European region "for now."
  • Build a small landing zone: subscriptions or accounts, network hub, identity, activity logs, and a break-glass path.
  • Price egress. A cheap VM with expensive traffic to an on-prem office in Business Bay is a common surprise.

What "landing zone" means in practice

Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework and AWS's Well-Architected guidance say the same thing: isolate production, log API activity, restrict public IPs, and manage identity centrally. For an SME this is not a 40-subscription enterprise topology. It is two or three subscriptions/accounts, a hub VNet/VPC, and a rule that nobody deploys with a personal cloud login. Without that, residency and backup conversations collapse the first time an engineer creates a resource in the wrong region.

A decision you can defend

Write one page: primary region, DR region, identity provider, who is on-call, and which workloads stay on-prem. That page is the architecture. The logo on the invoice is a consequence of it.
